Emergence
If “Emergence” seems familiar, it may be because I painted it live, at Art in the Garden 2019! It is my biggest animal painting, and first live painting. I actually never fully planned to paint this paiting live, it was actually supposed to be finished before the show! I had run out of time, as I had made my finished projects my priority for the show, and so rather than jeopardizing my other works to finish this one, I decided to finish it during the show!
There are only 3 octopuses in my portfolio, and this one is by far the largest. This canvas was actually a recycled one, and I had painted 2 other paintings on it before Emergence was even an idea! The first was a huge glow-in-the-dark jellyfish that I had painted as a Mother’s Day gift for my mom. The second was actually one of my first landscapes, one that I don’t display often (it’s more of a reference now, as it no longer reflects my skill level). When I had the idea of Emergence, I immediately sanded down the previous painting, and primed the entire canvas white. I brought it with me to the art show, set it up, and got to work!
