“The Beast” is my first octopus drawing. It was done in coloured pencil, with a chalk pastel background. I made this when I was 15 or 16, simply to see if I would be able to make it look anything like the photo. It took me over 18 hours to complete!

This piece has been a staple in my portfolio since it was completed, as it was one of the first few animals I had ever drawn! I remember the hours spent leaning over my desk, filling in each and every little section of skin. If you look closely, each individual shape has different shading and detailing, which is what took so long to create!

I love looking back at this piece, as it was truly the first piece that I really adored and inspired me to create every other animal I’ve drawn since! It also gives me motivation these days, as I often think, "If I could do that at 15, imagine what I could do now!”
